WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Geospatial Program (NGP) and the Office of Enterprise Information announced The National Map Users Conference (TNM UC), and the Geographic Information Science Workshop to be held May 10-13, 2011, in Lakewood, Colo. This inaugural event will assemble a wide range of participants including scientists, managers, and geospatial professionals from government, industry, academia, and other organizations.

FORT COLLINS, COLO. — Geotechnical Services, Inc. (GSI), has expanded their operations to include a new office in Fort Collins, Colo. Heading up the Fort Collins branch office is newly named Vice President Robin Dornfest, a ten-year veteran in the fields of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology, and Fort Collins resident since 2000.

WEST LAWN, PA. — Civil engineering firm McCarthy Engineering Associates Inc. has expanded its service offerings to include geotechnical engineering, adding to its portfolio of site development and environmental services for both public and private sectors throughout eastern Pennsylvania. McCarthy Engineering Associates said this new service enables the company to offer a wider array of services, including well monitoring, soils investigation, soil testing, foundation systems, compaction grouting, nuclear density testing, structural engineering, design and inspections.

The Interior Department is seeking nominations for membership on the newly formed National Geospatial Advisory Committee (NGAC). The NGAC is being created to advise the federal government on management of national geospatial programs and development of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). The NSDI promotes sharing of geospatial data throughout all levels of government, the private and non-profit sectors, and the academic community.

The Geospatial Industry Workforce Information System, a pilot project funded by the U.S. Department of Labor through a $700,000 grant to &quotdefine and communicate geospatial industry workforce need,&quot launched a website at www.giwis.org . Currently focused on Colorado, the site was designed by the Geospatial Information & Technology Association and the Association of American Geographers to be a model site for other locations. The site is designed as a one-stop resource for finding geospatial jobs, qualified employees, educational resources, schools, industry data, salary information, and more.

According to the latest research from Daratech, Inc., a leading market research firm for the information technology industries, the market for GIS and geospatial equipment, software, and services continues to increase. The company forecasts that worldwide revenue will reach $3.6 billion this year, up from $2.82 billion in 2004.

The growth is driven by sales of commercial data products and the emergence of desktop- and Internet-based systems, Daratech reports. Software developers comprise more than half of this projected revenue ($1.5 billion), with three vendors (ESRI, Bentley, and Intergraph Corp.) accounting for about half of the industry’s total software revenues.
