LANSING, MICH. The American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan (ACEC/M) recently honored firms for engineering and surveying excellence during the associations 49th annual Engineering and Surveying Excellence Awards ceremony. On February 22, design professionals and guests gathered at the JW Marriott in Grand Rapids to recognize outstanding Michigan engineering and surveying projects from the past year, as well as engineering professionals who have significantly contributed to the profession.

OLATHE, KAN. — Geotechnical Engineering Group (GEG), located in Grand Junction, Colo., officially changed its name to Terracon Consultants Inc. on Dec. 1, 2012. GEG joined Terracon in December 2010. As Terracon, they will continue to offer geotechnical, environmental, construction materials and facilities services.  

BETHESDA, MD. — Despite an 8.6-percent unemployment rate in the United States, at least 57 percent of the Sustaining Member organizations of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) are currently hiring for jobs within the geospatial industry. ASPRS recently conducted a survey of 129 ASPRS Sustaining Member career websites, and determined that in the month of November, at least 73 ASPRS Sustaining Member companies/agencies had job postings on their websites that consisted of positions ranging from entry-level jobs to high-level executive positions.  

  WASHINGTON, D.C. — TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) is seeking expressions of interest from consultants interested in producing a state-of-the-practice synthesis that documents advanced geospatial data tools, technologies, and information for highway projects, including procedures and proposed standards of practice that can be used to attain the level of accuracy when using these advanced geospatial technologies. Expressions of interest by consultants are due by Aug. 12, 2011.

DENVER —” The Freeport Regional Water Authority Intake Facilities Project located in Sacramento, Calif., for which CH2M HILL provided planning studies and analysis for the full project and final design services for the Sacramento River Intake and Pump Station facilities, has won the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) California Region’s Geotechnical Project of the Year award.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Geospatial Program (NGP) and the Office of Enterprise Information announced The National Map Users Conference (TNM UC), and the Geographic Information Science Workshop to be held May 10-13, 2011, in Lakewood, Colo. This inaugural event will assemble a wide range of participants including scientists, managers, and geospatial professionals from government, industry, academia, and other organizations.

NEW YORK — The Land Surveyors website (www.landsurveyors.com), online since 1996, has been re-designed from scratch and recently re-launched with new features such as a comprehensive directory featuring land surveying professionals and companies throughout the United States.

FORT COLLINS, COLO. — Geotechnical Services, Inc. (GSI), has expanded their operations to include a new office in Fort Collins, Colo. Heading up the Fort Collins branch office is newly named Vice President Robin Dornfest, a ten-year veteran in the fields of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology, and Fort Collins resident since 2000.

WEST LAWN, PA. — Civil engineering firm McCarthy Engineering Associates Inc. has expanded its service offerings to include geotechnical engineering, adding to its portfolio of site development and environmental services for both public and private sectors throughout eastern Pennsylvania. McCarthy Engineering Associates said this new service enables the company to offer a wider array of services, including well monitoring, soils investigation, soil testing, foundation systems, compaction grouting, nuclear density testing, structural engineering, design and inspections.
