NEW YORK, N.Y. — WSP, one of the world’s leading professional services firms, announced formal leadership of its national bridge inspection services, naming Salvatore Iodice, a senior vice president and longtime structural engineering manager for the firm in the U.S., to head the team.

Iodice, based in New York, leads more than 150 inspectors nationwide to work with state departments of transportation, transit agencies, federal agencies, bridge and port authorities, city agencies and municipalities to ensure that their structures meet or exceed requirements for safety and security. WSP’s diverse bridge inspection portfolio includes highway, long-span truss, arch and cable-supported bridges, steel and concrete viaducts, movable and undergrade railroad bridges.

“Our team combines traditional access inspections with drone technology and advanced AI that has revolutionized the inspection process, increasing safety for inspectors; improving access to hard to reach places on a structure; and providing much better imagery and data,” said David Weiss, Transportation and Infrastructure business line executive at WSP in the U.S. “Sal’s leadership, devotion and vision have been instrumental in shaping our practice. He and his entire team will continue to set the highest standards for bridge inspection innovation and excellence.”

Iodice joined the firm in 1990 following six years of bridge inspection in New York City and has since managed the inspection of more than 40,000 bridges. He most recently served as the firm’s Northeast region bridge inspection manager.

WSP’s team of inspectors nationwide, managed by six regional directors, conduct approximately 2,500 bridge inspections annually and have completed well over 100,000 inspections since the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) were established by the U.S. Congress in 1968. NBIS mandates biennial inspections of most U.S. bridges to maintain safe operations and check for structural and functional failures.

“WSP has been at the forefront of bridge safety since winning our first New York State contracts in 1978, and we’ve continuously expanded our expertise and services ever since,” Weiss said.

Bridge inspections led by WSP include iconic spans like the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge and George Washington Bridge in New York; Delaware Memorial Bridge in New Castle, Delaware; Sidney Lanier and Talmadge Bridges in Georgia; Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge in Dallas; Women of Achievement Pedestrian Bridge in Des Moines, Iowa; and the St. Croix River Crossing between Minnesota and Wisconsin. Inspection of the Bridge of the Americas, crossing the Pacific approach to the Panama Canal at Balboa, near Panama City, Panama, is scheduled for this winter.

The firm provides inspection services to other critical infrastructure assets, such as dams, tunnels and electric transmission towers.
