WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff designing Detroit freeway lighting improvements

Detroit — WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff has been named lead designer for the team that will upgrade highway and tunnel lighting facilities on limited access freeways within the Detroit metropolitan area.

The project is being undertaken by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) as a public-private partnership with lead concessionaire Star America, which is responsible for designing, building and financing the improvements, as well as providing operations and maintenance for 13 years. Aldridge Electric is the lead contractor on the design-build team. Cofely is responsible for operations & maintenance, and WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff is lead designer.

The project scope includes upgrades to approximately 15,000 existing highway lighting fixtures as well as improvements to more than 4,000 fixtures in four highway tunnels. WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff will design all the lighting, perform field surveys of existing tunnel locations, prepare a supplemental lighting tunnel plan to augment the original lighting design, and provide procurement specifications for the tunnel luminaires and surface and underpass fixtures.

The project is scheduled for completion in mid-2017.
