Wagman Completes Watkins Mill Road Interchange Ahead of Schedule

(York, Pa.) Wagman is proud to announce that it has completed the I-270 at Watkins Mill Road Interchange project, located in Gaithersburg, Md., six months ahead of the owner’s allotted schedule. The project opened to traffic in June and a virtual ribbon cutting ceremony was coordinated to celebrate the accomplishment.

This $90M project for the Maryland State Highway Administration relieves congestion on one of Montgomery County’s most travelled corridors. The project scope required a new interchange on I-270, consisting of 14 structures, including a five-span bridge over I-270 and a two-span bridge along an off-ramp. In addition to the main structures, the project featured two box culverts, a 72 inch storm drain, numerous cast-in-pace and MSE retaining walls, and the complete reconstruction of a tributary of Seneca Creek.

Additionally, because of a Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) by Wagman, a new retaining wall using grouted tiebacks was safely constructed between an active I-270 and an environmentally sensitive floodplain. Through partnership with MSHA, this VECP reduced project costs and lessened impacts to the traveling public.

“We are excited to deliver upon a commitment we made in 2017 to open this interchange in only 34 months, instead of the original 40 months available,” stated Greg Andricos, Wagman Heavy Civil’s president and coo.  “We performed over 375,000 man-hours on this project with zero lost time injuries. I am incredibly proud of our team and our partnership with the State Highway Administration and other stakeholders.”
