Kansas City, Mo. — Top-voted “Contemporary” and “Classic” water storage tanks have been announced in the 2015 Tank of the Year competition sponsored by Tnemec Company, Inc., a provider of high-performance coatings. The winners determined by online voting are a 500,000-gallon pedestal water tank from Plant City, Fla., in the Contemporary category and a bright blue legged tank located in Pittsfield, Ohio, in the Classic bracket.

“The Plant City water tank design, which mimics a strawberry, received more than 5,700 votes in the contemporary category that is open to projects with varied color schemes, creative logos and designs,” explained Doug Hansen, Director – Water Tank Market for Tnemec. “Built in 1978, the predominantly red and green water tank reflects Plant City’s claim as Florida’s Strawberry Capital where more than 10,000 acres of strawberries are planted every year.”

As the top vote-getter in the Classic category, which features water tanks with solid colors and block lettering, the Pittsfield tank’s exterior was coated using Tnemec’s high-performance fluoropolymer finish for extended color and gloss retention. “Tanks with these classic designs can be seen all over the country and continue to be local landmarks for their communities,” Hansen noted. “We are thrilled they’re being recognized in our contest.”

The winners were selected from a field of more than 200 water tanks nominated for the Tank of the Year competition, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. “This was the first time water tanks have been classified as contemporary or classic,” Hansen noted. “This format allowed voters to show their hometown pride by supporting their local water tower, regardless of design.”

A total of 20,703 votes were cast online by the public in the competition. The top 12 Tank of the Year finalists will be announced October 22 on Tnemec.com, followed by the overall winner on October 23.
