VHBs Bike Plan wins Innovative Transportation Solutions award

Providence, R.I. — VHB’s Bike Providence Master Plan was selected as the winner of the Innovative Transportation Solutions Award given by the Women in Transportation’s Rhode Island Chapter (WTS-RI). VHB’s bike plan is a comprehensive framework to identify, prioritize, and implement bicycle accommodation and accessibility throughout Providence. Public outreach, education, and community involvement have helped move the plan forward.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the WTS-RI chapter for our bike Providence Mater Plan,” said VHB’s Director of Bicycle Planning and Design Bill DeSantis. “We are proud to be developing and enhancing the city’s bicycle infrastructure and education about bike use, as we are working towards having Providence becoming a safe and accessible city for cyclists.”

The VHB planners used roadway data collected by VHB’s Pavement Management Team along with maps of routes actually used by cyclists collected via the VHB BikeWays Mobile App to identify which city roadways could accommodate cyclists. From this GIS base designers were able to generate short- and long-term recommendations to improve bike accommodations throughout Providence.

The Innovative Transportation Solutions Award is designed to honor the creative work of an innovative transportation project or service that improves the quality of life for its users and the Rhode Island community. WTS-RI will host a Member/Sponsor breakfast in May to honor all winners.
