VHB celebrates dedication and opening of Bill Delahunt Parkway

WATERTOWN, MASS. — VHB was in attendance on August 19 at the dedication and official opening of the Bill Delahunt Parkway in Weymouth, Mass. VHB was the design lead for the $35 million parkway project, a new east-west, cross-base parkway through the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station. VHB provided roadway and bridge design, environmental permitting, stormwater system design, and traffic signal design for this design-build project.

The Parkway was named on behalf of former Congressman Bill Delahunt, who worked on the transfer of the former Naval Air Station to local control and helped drive the project now known as Southfield.

VHB was heavily involved for much of the base redevelopment’s history, including the early environmental permitting, preparation of a DEIR and FEIR, and extensive monitoring of protected wildlife species that populate the base’s open spaces.

“This is a significant step towards the full realization of the Southfield development, and VHB is proud to be a part of it,” said Project Manager Bob Penfield.

The parkway design was required to avoid impacts to wetlands and protect upland wildlife species, and included the design and construction of nearly a mile of new road, including three bridge structures and 1,500 feet of retaining walls.

The project team includes Barletta Heavy Division, South Shore Tri-Town Development Corporation (SSTTDC), and Massachusetts Department of Transportation oversight.
