TWO DEWBERRY PROJECTS RECOGNIZED WITH ACEC VIRGINIA ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE AWARDS

Firm’s projects in Loudoun County among those recognized during ceremony

Fairfax, VA— Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm, recently received two awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Virginia during the 2020 Engineering Excellence Awards gala.

Dewberry’s raw water transmission main (RWTM) project for Loudoun Water received an honor award. The 5.5-mile long, 36- to 48-inch diameter raw water transmission main provides Loudoun Water with a sustainable and resilient water supply that serves more than 75,000 households in Loudoun County. The firm exceeded Loudoun Water’s goals, completing its work for just 80% of the approved construction management budget. The RWTM supports an innovative water banking program allowing water storage in future abandoned quarries for use during low flows on the Potomac River. The welded steel pipeline features a robust cathodic protection system and special coatings to achieve a 100-year lifespan. It includes 12 trenchless crossings to minimize land disturbance and 20 air-vacuum valve vaults that protect the pipeline from surges.

The Route 606 Loudoun County Parkway/Old Ox Road Widening and Reconstruction project earned a merit award. The design-build project included the reconstruction and widening of Route 606 from the Dulles Greenway to just south of Dulles West Boulevard from a two-lane undivided road to a four-lane divided road. A new bridge carrying Route 606 over the Horsepen Dam auxiliary spillway was designed, the principal spillway (box culvert) was lengthened, the dam embankment was widened and raised, and the auxiliary spillway was improved and realigned. A new access point to the National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather facility, three noise barriers, and pedestrian facilities were added. Dewberry provided engineering design services, including roadway, hydraulic, structural, traffic, and electrical engineering; dam modification design; environmental permitting and monitoring; engineering field surveys; and construction engineering inspection for the $119-million project.
