Three Thornton Tomasetti projects honored with 2014 AIA TAP BIM Awards

New York — Thornton Tomasetti announced that three of its projects, the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center in Anaheim, Calif.; Pegula Ice Rink at Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pa.; and the Northwestern Medicine Outpatient Care Pavilion in Chicago, Ill., each received a 2014 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Technology in Architecture (TAP) Building Information Modeling (BIM) award.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the AIA/TAP BIM awards, which seeks projects across seven categories that exhibit exemplary use of integrated and interoperable building information modeling.

Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center – Awarded for “Stellar Architecture Using Steel”

• Thornton Tomasetti provided structural design services and enclosure design services for Phase I of ARTIC, an all-steel, 66,500 SF terminal building featuring a grand hall, ticketing center and retail spaces that provides a gateway for Metrolink Commuter Rail, Amtrak, high-speed rail, bus and roadway transportation. The project is slated for completion in 2014.

• The terminal design features a steel pipe grid shell structure clad with ETFE cushions. The grid shell encloses an integral steel-framed three-story interior building which also connects to a pedestrian bridge spanning the rail lines.

• The transit center is a project of the City of Anaheim and Orange County Transit Authority. Along with Thornton Tomasetti, the ARTIC team included HOK, architect; Parsons Brinkerhoff, project manager and civil engineer; Buro Happold, MEP, enclosure engineering and 3D documentation; and Clark Construction, general contractor.

Pegula Ice Rink – Awarded for “Delivery Process Innovation”

• Pegula, home to Penn State University’s men’s and women’s NCAA Division I hockey teams, features a 45-foot tall glass and steel atrium and entrance, and a 6,000-seat ice rink.

• Thornton Tomasetti was hired by Crawford Architects/Bohlin Cywinski Jackson Architects to provide structural services and by Mortenson to provide construction support services. The project was completed in 2013.

Northwestern Medicine Outpatient Care Pavilion – Awarded in “Delivery Process Innovation”

• The Outpatient Care Pavilion is scheduled for completion this year, and has construction costs of $175 million.

• Thornton Tomasetti was contracted by architectural firm Cannon Design to provide structural services to the 975,000 SF, 24-story Outpatient Care Pavilion. The contractor on the project was Lend Lease/Pepper Construction JV, and the owner is NW Memorial Health Care.

• Two skybridges, 80 and 98 feet long, were engineered by Thornton Tomasetti to connect the medical facilities with adjacent parking.

• The 45,000-square-foot project site required transferring loads from the shear wall into the building using cantilevered grade beams. The design team utilized a universal grid system to create flexible program space for the steel-framed medical floors, which sit atop a seven-level concrete parking garage with dissimilar column spacing.

• Thornton Tomasetti also designed a system of multi-bay column transfers where the medical and parking garage levels interface to reconcile the differing column locations.
