STV earns recognition for Brooklyn housing development renovations

New York — Construction management and architectural/engineering design firm STV received a Project Achievement Award in the Building Renovation ($20 to $60 million) category from the Construction Management Association of America’s (CMAA) Metro New York/New Jersey Chapter for its work on the Kingsborough Houses development in Brooklyn, N.Y. STV served as the construction manager-as-agent for New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) on façade and structural upgrades and interior renovations of the Kingsborough Houses, consisting of 16 low-rise apartment buildings and the Kingsborough Extension, a 24-story senior citizens’ building and center.

Kingsborough Houses covers almost 16 acres spread across six city blocks. The project scope encompassed repair of the building facades to address unsafe conditions and protect the buildings’ exterior envelopes from various weather conditions. The project also included asbestos abatement, waterproofing, façade brick replacement, repointing and parapet replacement. New roofs were installed to improve the waterproofing and energy efficiency of the buildings, and a new water tank was installed at Kingsborough Extension.

“The team’s creativity and diligence played an essential role in meeting the client’s scheduling needs and containing costs on this complex assignment,” said Gus Maimis, LEED AP BD+C, STV senior vice president and Northeast territory manager for the firm’s Construction Management Division. “The apartment buildings remained fully occupied during construction. Our primary concern was the safety of both the residents and the construction trades as well as minimizing the impact of the work on the residents.”

STV phased the construction to allow work on multiple buildings simultaneously. The phased schedule, combined with careful management of the scope of work and emphasis on safety and the quality, enabled STV and the construction team to deliver the project ahead of schedule and under budget.

Awards were presented to NYCHA and STV at CMAA Metro New York/New Jersey Chapter’s awards banquet in June at The Yale Club of New York City.
