Structal-Bridges lands over $90 million in contracts for New York bridges

Saint-Georges, QC — Structal-Bridges, a division of Canam Group Inc., with U.S. corporate office located in Point of Rocks, Md., obtained two contracts totaling more than $90 million for the fabrication of the steel structures that will replace two major bridges in New York: the New NY Bridge Project to replace the Tappan Zee Bridge over the Hudson River owned by the New York State Thruway Authority and the Goethals Bridge that spans the Arthur Kill owned by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Both structures will be cable-stayed bridges, a design that’s being chosen more and more for the replacement of long-span bridges. The existing structures will be dismantled once the construction of the new bridges are completed.

As per the agreement concluded with Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC), a joint venture composed of Fluor Enterprises, American Bridge Company, Granite Construction Northeast and Traylor Bros., Structal-Bridges will supply the steel components for the reconstruction of the 2,230-foot (680 meters) main span of the Tappan Zee Bridge, which is located in Tarrytown, New York. The end-to-end replacement of this bridge constitutes the most important design-build highway infrastructure project ever to be undertaken in the U.S., and one of the largest construction projects in New York State history. Slated to open in 2018, the new 3.1-mile (5 km) bridge will feature four lanes in each direction.

The Goethals Bridge, linking Elizabeth, New Jersey to Staten Island in New York City, has an annual traffic volume of 14 million vehicles eastbound. The contract awarded by Kiewit-Weeks-Massman, AJV (KWM), a joint venture formed by Kiewit Infrastructure, Weeks Marine and Massman Construction, mandates Structal-Bridges to fabricate the steel components for the replacement of the main span with two spans, one eastbound and one westbound, that will measure 1,635 feet (498 meters) and count six lanes in total plus shoulders and a bicycle/pedestrian path. In addition to fabricating the structural steel, Structal-Bridges will also supply the anchor boxes that are to be installed in the top section of the eight towers. The new bridge is scheduled to open in 2017.

The steel components for these two projects will be fabricated between December 2014 and August 2016 at the Canam Group plants in Point of Rocks, Md., and Claremont, N.H., while deliveries will take place from July 2015 to September 2016.
