Stantec leads design for I-83 North York Widening Project

York, PA TSX, NYSE: STN

Top ten global design firm Stantec is leading design for the I-83 North York Widening Project in York, Pennsylvania, approximately 25 miles south of Harrisburg. As part of the $300 million project being led by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), approximately five miles of the four-lane interstate will be reconstructed and widened to six lanes and three interchanges will be reconstructed to improve safety and better accommodate traffic demand.

In addition to widening the interstate, Exits 19, 21, and 22 will be reconfigured to improve ramp capacity and correct short ramps that pose a challenge to motorists getting on and off the interstate. Other components of this project include replacement of 25 bridges and culverts; new retaining walls; the addition of three multi-lane roundabouts at Exit 22; significant stormwater/floodplain management improvements; and improvements to Mill Creek, which runs parallel to I-83 for approximately two miles.

“When I-83 was built nearly 70 years ago, officials could not have predicted the increase in traffic that would come in the following decades,” said Mike Bougher, Senior Principal at Stantec. “Reducing congestion around the Harrisburg and York areas, which lack a robust transit system like that in Philadelphia, is a rising focus, with several major roadway congestion projects currently in design or under construction.”

The project is being led out of Stantec’s Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania office. The team recently received approval to advance into final design and construction, with project completion estimated by 2026.

“We are proud to continue our longstanding relationship with PennDOT to ease congestion, improve safety, and deliver a modern roadway for motorists who depend on the I-83 corridor every day,” said Bryan Hoover, Senior Associate and I-83 Project Manager at Stantec. “As we proceed into final design, the work we are doing here boils down to safety, making sure the new facility will handle the increased traffic demand by engineering a modern interstate.”

A trusted expert in infrastructure upgrades across the nation, Stantec recently announced it is leading the design for the $71.7 million I-64 Widening Project in West Virginia as well as the design for Florida’s $212 million Turnpike reconstruction and capacity improvements, which will facilitate future express lane and electronic tolling operations.
