The building provides technical spaces to support hands-on learning and research activities that are critical to the field of engineering

Prairie View, TXPrairie View A&M University recently opened their new Engineering Classroom and Research Building (EnCARB). The three-story building provides instructional and research laboratory space for the Roy G. Perry College of Engineering and supports undergraduate education, student innovation, and emerging areas of research across various engineering disciplines.

Global integrated design and engineering firm Stantec provided architecture, interior design, and lab planning for this latest addition to the Prairie View A&M campus.

Nearly two-thirds of EnCARB’s 106,000 square feet are dedicated to instructional laboratories, with more than 30 unique labs located between the three floors. Also included are flexible spaces to support a variety of teaching methods, and a maker space to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and classroom spaces for direct instruction.

The labs support the chemical, mechanical, and civil engineering departments and multidisciplinary research in space exploration, data analytics, artificial intelligence, robotics, structural analysis, and 3D manufacturing. EnCARB is also one of a few facilities in the U.S. to have a microgravity drop tower for research in space-related conditions.

“EnCARB will allow PVAMU to take their laboratory instruction and research pursuits to the next level with state-of-the-art facilities that are flexible by design and will allow them to be nimble and adapt in the fast evolving field of engineering,” said Cynthia Labelle, principal at Stantec. “Students will learn and grow across many engineering disciplines in a future-focused learning environment.”

Stantec has steadily helped clients respond to evolving science and technology academic learning, with related projects such as: Yale University Science BuildingThe University of Texas at Dallas Sciences Building, West Chester University Sciences & Engineering CenterCentral Michigan University Biosciences BuildingTexas A&M University – Corpus Christi Engineering & Life Sciences Research Building, and The University of Texas at Permian Basin School of Engineering Building.
