SOM and Clark Construction selected to lead design-build team for SeaTac arrivals facility

San Francisco — Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) and Clark Construction Group have been selected to lead the design-build team for the Port of Seattle’s International Arrivals Facility at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The project team includes local firms The Miller Hull Partnership, Guy F. Atkinson Construction, LLC, KPFF Consulting Engineers, and Madsen, Kneppers & Associates, Inc. (MKA); the Seattle office of Arup; and European bridge design specialists Schlaich Bergermann und Partner (SBP).

SOM and Clark Construction have previously worked together as design-build partners on over 20 projects nationwide. One of the leading architecture, interior design, engineering, and urban planning firms in the world, SOM has a firm-wide practice group specializing in the design and planning of aviation projects and is known for conceiving some of the world’s most memorable airport terminal buildings. Clark, one of the most experienced and respected building and civil construction firms in the United States, has delivered over 40 major airport projects across the country.

The Puget Sound region’s best planning, design, and engineering talent will enrich SOM and Clark’s airport planning and construction expertise with proven experience at Sea-Tac and strong connections with the local community. Regarded as the local architecture firm that has best translated Northwest style for the modern day, Seattle-based Miller Hull is partnering with SOM’s architectural practice to craft a high quality passenger experience unique to the Pacific Northwest.

Structural engineering is a collaboration between SOM’s Structural and Seismic Engineering Studio and KPFF, one of the largest engineering firms in the Pacific Northwest, with specialist expertise provided by SBP, one of the premier bridge design firms in Europe. Clark is engaging the expertise of its sister company, the Renton, Washington-based Atkinson Construction, which is recognized as one of the leading transportation civil contractors in the nation. Completing the core team are Arup, the world-renowned strategist and designer of innovative high-performance mechanical, electrical, technology, and security engineering systems, and MKA, a nationally recognized civil engineer headquartered in Seattle that specializes in complex civil infrastructure projects.

Scheduled to open in late 2019, the renovation project will add a new U.S. Customs and Border Protection passenger processing area adjacent to the existing concourse A. Sea-Tac Airport is the fastest growing of the top 20 U.S. airports and was the 13th busiest passenger in 2014. By building a new International Arrivals Facility, the Port of Seattle Commission is striving to increase its capacity to accommodate present and future international travel growth, improve its processing of the growing number of arriving international travelers and their baggage, and provide a world-class traveler experience that makes Sea-Tac a preferred West Coast hub.

On December 8, 2015, the Port of Seattle Commission approved the project to move forward into design, for delivery in September 2019.
