SDC, ACI, and PCA SDC, ACI, and PCA team up for concrete sustainability

FARMINGTON HILLS, MICH.—Recently, leaders from the Strategic Development Council (SDC) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI) met with new president and CEO of the Portland Cement Association (PCA) to discuss the on-going concrete sustainability initiative.

Meeting in Las Vegas during World of Concrete with new PCA President and CEO Brian McCarthy were SDC sustainability champion J.C. Roumain of Holcim, SDC Chair Claude Bedard of Euclid Chemical, and SDC Managing Director Douglas Sordyl. Also in attendance were ACI Executive Vice President Bill Tolley, Bob Risser of the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI), Dave Shepherd of PCA, and Chris Cooper of Cooper Johri Management Consulting Corp.

SDC introduced McCarthy to its concrete sustainability initiative, intended to produce a vision document that is under development by concrete industry stakeholders. Expected to be completed later this year, the vision document is intended to outline broad goals and strategies to which all segments of concrete industry can align their own corporate activities to assure a common concrete industry message—ensuring that concrete is designed, specified, produced, installed, and applied, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.

"Concrete sustainability is a crucial issue in the industry right now," said Douglas Sordyl of the SDC. "And with the continued assistance of PCA, who together with ACI identified the need for such a common industry approach two years ago, there is no doubt we will be able to move this initiative forward with much success."
