San Antonio Water System selects LAN as design consultant

San Antonio, Texas — The San Antonio Water System (SAWS) selected planning, engineering and program management firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) as a design consultant to improve its water distribution and sanitary sewer collection system.

The largest municipally owned water and wastewater utility in the San Antonio/Bexar County area, SAWS provides service to more than 1.8 million residents within the corporate limits of the City and Bexar County. With SAWS recently integrating with the BexarMet Water System, numerous segments of water mains are in need of rehabilitation, replacement or reconstruction to meet SAWS standards. Also, SAWS is upgrading its aging sewer infrastructure to comply with the consent decree settlement agreement approved in June 2013 with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

“We are looking forward to working with SAWS to improve its water infrastructure and reduce the number of sanitary sewer overflows,” said Jeremy Doege, P.E., LAN’s associate and team leader. “The improvements also will ensure residents at the far reaches of the system have adequate water pressure and sufficient fire protection, while eliminating segments of pipe that are old, leaking and wasting water.”

Current projects implemented as part of this Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract include replacement of 28,000 linear feet of 12-inch water line and sanitary sewer rehabilitation of approximately 10,000 linear feet of pipe ranging from 8 to 48 inches. The projects will be done using trenchless methods such as pipe bursting, cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) as well as conventional open-cut construction methods
