PTI Announces new Code and certification program for the post-tensioning industry

LAS VEGAS – Last week at the World of Concrete event in Las Vegas, the Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI) highlighted the release ACI-PTI 320-25, Building Code Requirements for Post-Tensioned Structural Concrete, as well as a new certification program for multistrand and bar post-tensioning systems.

ACI-PTI 320-25 Code Release

The ACI-PTI 320-25 Building Code Requirements for Post-Tensioned Structural Concrete is scheduled for release in early 2025. This new version represents the joint efforts of PTI and the American Concrete Institute (ACI) to create a comprehensive code covering the design and construction of post-tensioned concrete structures.

“This is the first ever version of this new code, created and established jointly by PTI and ACI to cover the specifics of post-tensioned concrete structures,” said Tim Christle, Executive Vice President of PTI.

The code offers practical solutions and long-term benefits to enhance the quality and consistency of construction practices. It also provides a unified framework for designing and implementing post-tensioned structural concrete, helping to streamline processes and ensure greater durability and safety in construction projects.

New Certification Program for Post-Tensioning Systems

PTI also highlighted their new certification program aimed at qualifying, testing and certifying multistrand and bar post-tensioning systems (PTS). This program is built upon the PTI/ASBI M50.3 specification, a widely adopted standard supported by numerous state transportation departments and the Federal Highway Administration.

Once certified through this program, post-tensioning systems are registered on the PTI website, enabling project owners to confidently incorporate these systems into their structures without needing individual prequalification processes. This initiative is designed to increase the quality and durability of post-tensioned structures while fostering efficiency for owners and contractors alike.

According to Christle, “This program directly enhances the quality and durability of post-tensioned concrete structures utilizing these systems.” In addition, he said that owners can “confidently use these systems on their structures, instead of maintaining their own individual prequalification processes.”

Benefits of both updates include:

  • Addressing the evolving demands of modern construction.
  • Enhanced post-tensioning standards and certification programs that improve structural safety and reliability.
  • Ensuring buildings and infrastructure can withstand extreme conditions and long-term use.
  • Fostering innovation by encouraging adoption of cutting-edge technologies and techniques.
  • Boosting efficiency and reducing project timelines.
  • Promoting sustainability by advocating durable materials that minimize waste and reduce environmental impact.
  • Strengthening the global reputation of post-tensioning as an essential and forward-thinking construction technology.

Once released, the ACI-PTI 320-25 Building Code Requirements for Post-Tensioned Concrete code will be available for purchase on the PTI website: www.post-tensioning.org/store.
