Pittsburgh International Airport collaborated with innovative ground improvement contractor Menard Group USA on two projects

PITTSBURGH – Recently named among the world’s most innovative organizations by Fast Company magazine, Pittsburgh International Airport collaborated with innovative ground improvement contractor Menard Group USA on two projects that were built at sites with problematic soil conditions.

The first took place at the airport’s new industrial campus known as Neighborhood 91, where Pittsburgh-based Menard installed Controlled Modulus Column (CMC)™ rigid inclusions to support a 44,000 square-foot warehouse and a 3,000 square-foot building. Menard’s solution was more cost-effective and required less time than deep foundations, which were the original solution. CMCs increase the stiffness of compressible soils and improve settlement characteristics.

The second project – in which Peoples Natural Gas partnered with Pittsburgh International Airport for a first-of-its-kind electrical microgrid to power the airport – included five natural gas-fueled generators and approximately 7,800 solar panels. Menard installed vibro stone columns to support the structures. Stone columns are an efficient and cost-effective solution for improving soil prior to construction of foundations and slabs for commercial, industrial and residential buildings.

“Both projects were completed ahead of schedule,” said Jordan Medich, Project Manager for Menard Group USA. “We worked closely with the general contractors to shift resources to meet the project deadlines. We worked  close to the runway, so we took into account every safety precaution required to complete the job.”

Pittsburgh International Airport’s industrial campus is the 91^st neighborhood in Pittsburgh’s unique and eclectic neighborhood system. Adjacent to the airport terminal and runway, it has been referred to as a “game-changer” for the additive manufacturing industry.
