DIVISION UPDATES

CENTRAL FLORIDA

I-4 Direct Connect Design-Build

The I-4 Direct Connect design-build project in Orlando is in its final stages. We achieved a major milestone in October by erecting the remaining bridge girders. Crews are working on completing the last three bridge decks, including stay in place forming, reinforcing steel, and concrete placement. Once that is complete, subcontractors will mobilize to put the finishing touches on the bridge before Superior opens it to traffic.

Wekiva Parkway Section 6 Design-Build

The Wekiva Parkway Section 6 design-build team recently celebrated its fourth anniversary onsite. The team has now completed all major operations for the 18 structures across the 6-mile corridor including the three-signature cast-in-place segmental bridges over the Wekiva River. Multiple subcontractors have mobilized to complete the remaining items for the bridges, which include painting and installing barrier wall and railings. Roadway crews are now focusing on the upcoming traffic shift pushing the project into the final phase with an estimated completion of the first quarter of 2022.

SR 56 Diverging Diamond Interchange at I-75

The SR 56 Diverging Diamond Interchange crews are working hard to get a heavily traveled interchange ready for the holiday season. Superior presented FDOT with an opportunity to create additional capacity by opening an additional lane of traffic prior to the thanksgiving holiday. The additional lane will help reduce traffic delays and allow the community more time to enjoy vast amenities offered by all the local business at this interchange. To accomplish this, we partnered with FDOT to redesign and relocate a new shared used path for pedestrians and bicyclists. This redesign creates more work area and allows for accelerated construction of MSE walls, drilled shafts, concrete barrier walls, roadway, and drainage.

NORTHEAST FLORIDA

First Coast Expressway

The First Coast Expressway project in Clay County, Florida continues to rapidly advance ahead of the contract schedule, currently ahead by more than 15 months. In the 31 months actively worked to-date, Superior fully constructed 10 of the 15 bridges, excavated and placed more than 5.7 million cubic yards of embankment, and worked more than 900,000 manhours. The First Coast Expressway project has the largest number of female personnel of any single Superior project with 45% of the field office staff and 13% of the craft being females.

I-10 Widening from I-295 to I-95 Design-Build

The I-10 Widening design-build project is located just west of Downtown Jacksonville, Florida and is running on all construction cylinders now the design work is completed, and we are entering the drier months of the year. Currently, roadway construction activities are focused on drainage installation, excavation and embankment, preparing the subgrade, and placing Portland Cement Concrete Pavement as well as MSE wall construction. Crews are progressing on bridge construction with pile installation and substructure concrete placements. Additionally, we are excited that we set our first beams and our first deck pour is scheduled. We are also making significant progress on the under-bridge walls by installing H-pile and lagging as well as the soil anchors at numerous locations with the cast-in-place fascia walls.

SR 200 (US 301) Test Road

The work on the SR 200 Test Road project is nearing completion. Crews completed the concrete paving in August and grinding began mid-November. The grade crew is working ahead of the asphalt subcontractor to tie shoulders and turning lanes into the Portland Cement Concrete Pavement, with ditch grading and sod, signs, and final pavement markings to follow. Completion is scheduled for March 2022.

PANHANDLE

SR 388

Crews recently completed pile driving operations on the SR388 project in Bay County, Florida and are preparing to set beams and begin superstructure work on the two parallel bridges crossing Crooked Creek. Meanwhile, roadway crews are preparing for the first major traffic shift, which will move traffic entering Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport onto portions of the newly completed roadway. Once traffic is shifted off the existing roadway in early 2022, crews will begin work on the twolane roundabout. This roundabout will be the first to be constructed in Bay County, Florida, servicing both SR 388 and the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport.

MID-SOUTH

I-65 / I-70 North Split Design-Build

The North Split design-build project in downtown Indianapolis is steadily ramping up for winter operations as the project prepares to enter its first winter season. Types of work that Superior will continue over the next several months include retaining wall installation, bridge construction, structure demolition, and pile driving. Crews will use thermal blankets and heaters to protect people and equipment. Additionally, the project saw its first major traffic movement open last month and continues to progress.

GREAT LAKES HEAVY CIVIL

Chicago Harbor Lock North Pier Stabilization

The Chicago Harbor Lock North Pier Stabilization project for the US Army Corp of Engineers is wrapping up. Crews are finishing pouring the reinforced concrete bulkhead storage pads, bollard installation, and will begin work forming and pouring 600 LF of cast-in-place retaining wall before the weather changes. Once completed, the bulkheads for the Chicago Harbor Locks, currently stored off site, will have a new 16-in reinforced concrete slab to rest on when not in use.

CAROLINAS

US 1 Over I-20 Interchange Improvements Design-Build

The US 1 over I-20 Interchange Improvements design-build project is Superior’s first project in the state of South Carolina and started with great success. With the design complete, construction started in September with the first order of operations having a 90-day ICT (Intermediate Contract Time), the team is scheduled to complete this operation 16 days ahead of schedule. We also began clearing operations allowing roadway crews to start in December with new services roads alignments.

I-20 over the Savannah River Bridge Replacement Design-Build

The I-20 over Savanah River Bridge Replacement design-build project, located on the SC / GA border, completed its first major traffic shift prior to the thanksgiving holiday. Superior shifted the WB traffic onto the new bridge structure, which was erected between the existing EB and WB bridges, allowing crews to begin demolition and reconstruction of the existing WB travel lanes. As we progress into the end of 2021, we will begin Phase 3 consisting of the demolition and reconstruction of the 1220-ft long Savanah River WB bridge, the 410-ft long Augusta Canal WB bridge, and nearly 10,000 LF of roadway. Crews will conduct soon begin pile driving operations, concrete pours, structure demolition, roadway demolition, and resurfacing.

5th Street Bridge Rehabilitation

Structural repairs are coming to an end on 5th Street Bridge and the final architectural items are beginning installation. Superior will be installing LED lighting, shade canopies, benches, playground equipment, and landscaping.
