New update to cold-formed steel standard includes a supplement

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) [ www.steel.org] announced the publication of AISI S230-07 w/S2-08, the Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Framing—Prescriptive Method for One and Two Family Dwellings, 2007 Edition With Supplement 2. Supplement 2 was developed in 2008 to revise and clarify certain wall bracing provisions. The full document, AISI S230-07 w/S2-08, provides prescriptive requirements for cold-formed steel-framed detached one- and two-family dwellings, townhouses, attached multi-family dwellings, and other attached single-family dwellings. This new version supersedes the previous 2006 edition.

AISI S230-07 w/S2-08 has been referenced by the 2009 editions of the International Code Council (ICC) and National Fire Protection Association model building codes. The standard is also referenced in ICC-600, the new Standard for Residential Construction in High-Wind Regions. The standard is a valuable resource for builders, architects, engineers and code officials that design, inspect, or review plans for residential steel construction. It was developed by AISI’s Committee on Framing Standards (COFS) through the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) consensus process, which includes engineers, researchers, producers, manufacturers, installers and builders.

Jay Larson, P.E., F. ASCE., managing director of construction technical for AISI, said that the revisions to the standard are significant, such as allowing the Prescriptive Method to apply to three-story buildings and buildings with hip framing, which were not addressed in previous editions. "There are also changes that increase the competitiveness of cold-formed steel in the marketplace, including provisions for clip angle bearing stiffeners, hole reinforcing, single L-headers, and inverted L-header assemblies, among other additions. There are many technical changes to the provisions in the new edition to keep up with the ever-changing requirements in codes and referenced standards," he said.
