National Accolades for North Carolina A&T State University Student Center Highlight Stewart’s Impact on Campus

RALEIGH, N.C. – Stewart, an interdisciplinary design, engineering and planning firm, was recognized by the National Council of Structural Engineers Association (NCSEA) and Engineering News-Record (ENR) Southeast for its role in the North Carolina Agricultural and Technology (A&T) State University student center project. The project was selected as a winner for the 2019 Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards by the NCSEA, one of only three projects in the country recognized for structural design for new buildings in the $20 to $100 million category. The project also received ENR Southeast’s 2019 Best Project Award – Award of Merit in the higher education category.

Stewart’s structural engineering practice played a pivotal role in the design of the $80 million, 150,000 square foot, LEED silver certified student center that serves as a campus focal point and acts as a multicultural hub for the student body. Created with the goal of increasing enrollment and enhancing the entrepreneurial spirit at the school, Stewart’s structural group helped accomplish this with one of the most complex designs ever seen in the state, with numerous structural complexities including long cantilevers throughout the entire building, a unique exterior wall system and two expansive stairs.

“We’re honored to have been a part of the North Carolina A&T student center project,” said Chris Herron, PE, senior vice president and structural engineering practice leader at Stewart. “The recognitions by both NCSEA and ENR Southeast demonstrate the importance of design innovation and highlight the creativity every person brought to this project. We’re thankful for our Stewart team and the partners who collaborated to make a true impact on the campus.”

Stewart’s structural group collaborated with key partners, including Balfour Beatty and D.H. Griffin Construction in association with C2 Contractors, Vines Architecture, Covington and Associates and RMF Engineering to bring the student center to life.

The NCSEA Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards highlight some of the best examples of structural engineering ingenuity throughout the world. Projects are judged on innovative design, engineering achievement and creativity. Winning project teams were recognized at the NCSEA Summit, held on Thursday, Nov. 14 in Anaheim, California.
