Michael McGuire to take helm at Journal-AWWA

DENVER – The American Water Works Association today announced that renowned water expert and author Michael J. McGuire, PhD, PE, has been named Interim Editor in Chief for the Journal – American Water Works Association, effective June 1, 2014.

“Michael McGuire is one of the most respected names in the water community, and AWWA is proud to have his technical and literary expertise at the helm of Journal AWWA,” said AWWA Chief Executive Officer David LaFrance.

Journal AWWA, published continuously since 1914, is AWWA’s flagship publication and is a highly valued benefit of membership in AWWA.  The Journal includes both professional and scholarly content, publishing both peer-reviewed and nonpeer-reviewed articles.

“Dr. McGuire’s scholarly contributions as a volunteer in the association over the past 44 years, his broad experience in the water profession, and his considerable skills as an author and editor make him an ideal candidate for this appointment,” said AWWA Director of Publishing Liz Haigh.

A professional engineer in California and Pennsylvania, McGuire’s career has included years of service at both drinking water utilities and consulting firms.  He worked for the Philadelphia Water Department early in his career and then for 13 years at Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.  He founded and managed McGuire Environmental Consultants, Inc. from 1992 to 2005.

A widely published author and editor, McGuire most recently wrote the popular book The Chlorine Revolution:  Drinking Water Disinfection and the Fight to Save Lives that was published by AWWA. He has earned many AWWA awards over the years, including the John L. Leal Award in 2014, the A.P. Black Research Award in 2009, the Publications Award in 2001 and the George Warren Fuller Award in 1994.

McGuire has a B.S. in civil engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in environmental engineering from Drexel University.
