International Holcim Awards competition for sustainable construction open for entries

Zürich, Switzerland — The 3rd International Holcim Awards competition for projects and visions in sustainable construction is currently open for entries. The competition offers a total of $2 million in prize money. Projects are eligible for entry if they have reached an advanced stage of design but had not started construction or commercial production before July 1, 2010.

The competition features the Holcim Awards (main category) for architects, planners, engineers, project owners, builders, and construction firms, and a dedicated “Next Generation” (student category) for visions for sustainable construction by university students.

In North America, the Holcim Awards is supported by partner university Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who will also host the meeting of the jury. Andrew Scott, associate professor of architecture at MIT, is a member of the foundation’s Technical Competence Centre (TCC) that provides academic and technical support to the foundation. Reed Kroloff, director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art and Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., is engaged in championing the Holcim Awards competition in Canada and the United States. He was a member of the Holcim Awards juries for North America in 2005 and 2008.

The 2011 jury will include: Mohsen Mostafavi (head), Harvard University Graduate School of Design; Ray Cole, University of British Columbia; Keller Easterling, Yale University; Harry Gugger, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne; Sheila Kennedy, MIT; Hans-Rudolf Schalcher, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology; Nader Tehrani, MIT; Bernard Terver, Holcim North America; and Mark West, University of Manitoba.
