HNTB adds Thomas DeHaven to national bridge practice

DeHaven brings 38 years of experience designing iconic, large-scale bridges

MINNEAPOLIS – Thomas DeHaven, PE, has joined HNTB as national bridge practice consultant and vice president. Based in Minneapolis, he provides leadership on complex bridge projects across the nation, including design-build pursuits and constructability reviews.

DeHaven brings 38 years of experience to HNTB. This expertise includes a specialization in the design, inspection and on-site construction of complex, multi-phase bridge projects throughout the U.S. He also has extensive experience in management, strategic planning, business development, budgeting and forecasting for bridge construction projects.

“Tom is a well-respected and widely recognized leader in all aspects of bridge design, inspection, construction and delivery,” said John Barton, HNTB professional services chair. “His trusted relationships with transportation leaders and strong technical expertise will help our clients with their complex bridge programs.”

DeHaven oversaw and played a key role in the design process for numerous iconic bridge projects in his career. He led the quality control team for the I-35W St. Anthony Falls Replacement Bridge in Minneapolis, a $234 million 8-lane project constructed in 11 months. He also was the resident engineer for the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Bridge in Delaware, where he managed a staff of 12 professionals involved in the regular inspection of infrastructure.

In 2012, the American Segmental Bridge Institute recognized DeHaven with a leadership award for his outstanding work designing, inspecting and constructing segmental bridges. DeHaven has served on national code and specification committees for the Post-Tensioning Institute to improve bridge construction. Currently, he serves on both the grouting and constructability committees for ASBI. He received his Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from The Citadel.

“We are thrilled to welcome Tom to our growing Minneapolis office,” said Tom Sorel, vice president and Minnesota office leader. “His significant experience and knowledge in bridge design will play a key role as HNTB continues to advance its leadership in the bridge industry – both in Minneapolis and nationwide.”
