HDRs Larry Kyle named ACEC Engineer of Year for Washington

Seattle — Larry Kyle, P.E., senior vice president and senior program manager in HDR’s Seattle office, has been named Engineer of the Year for his home state of Washington by the American Council of Engineering Companies. The award recognizes the success, commitment, and contribution of an outstanding individual to the engineering profession. It was presented at ACEC Washington’s recent annual engineering excellence awards gala.

A professional engineer, Kyle has more than 40 years of project management and design experience with a major emphasis on design and planning of highways and bridges. He has been with HDR for 30 years. He holds a civil engineering degree from the University of Washington.

The award caps a successful engineering career for Kyle who as a boy marveled at the development of roads and bridges in his home state of Washington. He has worked on more than 200 projects during his career, including two recent projects drawn straight from his childhood memories: the SR 520 Bridge Replacement and HOV Program, and the Bellevue Direct Access (I-405 Interchange) Project.

About receiving the award, Kyle said “It was totally a surprise. I guess I never thought my work would result in an award like this. I’m an engineer because I love being an engineer.”

To those who work with Kyle, the award comes as no surprise. “We are thrilled that Larry is honored as the ACEC of Washington Engineer of the Year,” said HDR Area Manager Karen Doherty. “Larry’s technical expertise and ability to objectively resolve project challenges are two characteristics that he consistently demonstrates. Larry is also a superb mentor to his project teams and this award recognizes him for the qualities that make him a truly outstanding engineer.”
