HDR Publishes One of the First Studies on Impacts of DERs on Electric Fleet Charging

OMAHA, Neb. — HDR’s Lukas Rowland, battery energy storage system lead and fellow, has authored one of the first comprehensive case studies examining the impact of using distributed energy resources to support fleet electrification. The in-depth study focuses on three fleet types: transit buses, school buses and courier vans.

“Finding the best ways for utilities and their customers to reliably maximize renewable energy integration in the transition to low-carbon generation sources is something we’re still figuring out globally,” Rowland said. “We are pleased to share the research I conducted during my fellowship because it unifies transportation fleet and power elements, looking at the financial, energy resiliency and emissions implications of DERs. It’s exciting to help fleet owners understand the potential costs and benefits of using DERs as part of their fleet electrification plan.”

The study explores many variables affecting fleet electrification including fleet type, charging infrastructure, utility rate structures, charging control and strategy, and a behind-the-meter energy resources. Modeling and analytical tools Zero+ and HOMER are featured as a way to provide fleet owners and operators a preview that highlights how their electrified fleet might perform related to power consumption and vehicle capabilities on a day-to-day basis.
