GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc. completes project work on CSX rail line

PHILADELPHIA — GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc., an environmental and geotechnical consulting firm, recently completed geotechnical instrumentation and engineering support on the CSX rail artery that extends from Trenton, N.J., through Philadelphia.

The rail lines required additional overhead clearance to allow heavier freight to traverse the line; therefore, the existing rail line was designed to be lowered about 5 feet. GZA was retained by the general contractor JMG Construction Corp. to monitor soil movement with geotechnical instrumentation and engineering support during the installation of slope stabilization structures and soldier pile drilling operations. Installation of excavation support and a soldier pile and lagging wall was required to protect residential properties adjacent to the rail line.
