First graduate fellowship in sustainability for Texas A&Ms civil engineering department

DALLAS—Jaster-Quintanilla (JQ)/Dallas selected Texas A&M University’s Dwight Look College of Engineering as the recipient of a five-year financial gift from the firm to help fund a graduate fellowship in sustainability within the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering. The graduate fellowship in sustainability is the first of its kind in the university’s 132-year history. JQ is also funding a second fellowship that focuses on structural engineering.

According to Stephen H. Lucy, P.E., managing principal of JQ/Dallas and Texas A&M alumni, "We believe that higher education is the key to providing future civil engineers who are knowledgeable about sustainability. We selected Texas A&M because of our long-standing history of hiring graduates from the university and their demonstrated commitment to sustainability."

Said Lucy, "The College of Engineering is challenging each department to bring more sustainable topics into the curriculum, so the fellowship provides a timely incentive to focus on this goal."

In March, JQ hosted a "Salute to Sustainable Design Education" and invited Texas colleges and universities that are focused on sustainable curricula to attend the event in Dallas. Among those attending were Texas A&M, Southern Methodist University, Rice University, the Dallas County Community College District, and the University of North Texas. Jill Jordan, P.E., Dallas assistant city manager, presented Lucy with an official proclamation recognizing March 26 as a "Salute to Sustainable Design Education."
