Houston, TX – The Association of Water Board Directors (AWBD) has presented the Clear Lake City Water Authority (CLCWA) with the 2021 Project Award for its Exploration Green Project. The award was announced at the AWBD Midwinter conference in January 2022. CLCWA hired planning, engineering and program management firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) in 2013 to serve as the project’s design engineer and to oversee construction.

The projects submitted to AWBD were judged by a panel of professionals with experience in the industry. The award is to highlight outstanding projects that will improve and enhance the community. CLCWA won the award in the category of landscaping, parks and trails.

The Exploration Green project, a five-phase project with four phases completed, is a series of detention ponds and a nature park used to improve stormwater management and provide recreation for the Clear Lake community. The land was previously a golf course before CLCWA purchased it in order to benefit the community and protect homes from flooding.

“I’m happy CLCWA received recognition for their innovation and commitment to providing their community with more resilient storm protection,” said Kelly Shipley, P.E., LAN’s district engineering and land development team leader, as well as project manager for Exploration Green.

The Exploration Green project has been selected for various other awards, including being recognized as a Conservation Wrangler by Texan by Nature; receiving the Treasure of the Bay Non-Profit Award by the Texas Master Naturalist Galveston Bay Chapter; the Gold Medal Texas Engineering Excellence Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies; and more.
