Dr. Tony Hunley named Stantec’s new Bridge Sector Leader

LEXINGTON, KY-NYSE, TSX:STN

Leading global design firm Stantec has named Tony Hunley, P.E., S.E., Ph.D., its new Bridge Sector Leader. In this role, he will lead the firm’s strategic direction for the Bridge practice to facilitate continued growth, diversify services, drive innovation, and enhance technical excellence. He is taking over for Dr. Reed Ellis, who will remain part of the Bridge sector leadership team. Currently ranked a Top 10 Bridge Firm by Engineering News-Record (ENR), Stantec’s Bridge team provides its clients services through the full bridge lifecycle, including planning, design, inspection, rehabilitation, and maintenance on structures that span the distances between where we are and where we want to go.

In his more than 25-year career, Dr. Hunley has provided project and program management, design, and technical oversight across every phase of complex bridge projects. He is currently serving as program manager for the 22-firm consultant team delivering the Bridging Kentucky Program—an aggressive Kentucky Transportation Cabinet bridge preservation and replacement initiative to address critical bridges across the state. In the past two years, nearly 380 of the more than 1,100 bridges evaluated by the program team have progressed to construction.

“Tony’s career has centered on delivering complex bridge projects across North America, including one of the most aggressive bridge rehabilitation and replacement programs in the United States,” said Brian Norris, Stantec’s Transportation Business Leader. “His experience and expertise will support the longstanding success of our Bridge team as we work with our clients to address their bridge needs.”

“Bridges aren’t just science, they’re art. Everything we do—from planning to design to inspection and rehabilitation—shows our public commitment and our passion for bridges,” said Dr. Hunley. “As owners’ bridge inventories continue to age while traffic demands and construction costs climb, our focus will be providing innovative solutions in design, inspection, and construction. I am honored to carry forward Reed’s legacy, as we remain committed to delivering impactful infrastructure upgrades in the communities we serve.”

The team’s portfolio includes award-winning work and highly recognizable projects, from the US Route 460 Grassy Creek Twin Bridges to the Mistissini Wooden Bridge to the Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Bridge Replacement. The firm’s state-of-the-art bridge management system can be implemented with existing inventories from a few bridges to 50,000 or more structures. The system’s analysis and simulation capabilities include work recommendations based on lifecycle and benefit-cost analysis, budget analysis, trade-off analysis, and performance prediction.
