Dewberry recognized for contributions to environmental protection

Fairfax, Va. — Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm, recently received an American Road & Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation (ARTBA-TDF) Globe Award. The award recognizes the firm’s dedication to protecting and enhancing the natural environment in the planning, design, and construction of the $159 million replacement of New Jersey’s Route 3 Bridge that spans the Passaic River.

Dewberry led the environmental assessment, completed the project’s final scope development phase, and provided preliminary and final design services for the 2.5-mile project.

The project involved replacing the existing moveable Route 3 Bridge over the Passaic River with a fixed multi-span steel bridge and required associated roadway work from Main Avenue in Clifton, New Jersey, to Route 17 in Rutherford, New Jersey.

The project included new collector-distributor roads as well as acceleration and deceleration lanes. It incorporated a series of environmental protection and enhancement features that resulted from collaboration with the New jersey Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (Land Use Regulation Program and Mitigation Unit, Historic Preservation Office, and Green Acres Program), U.S. Coast Guard, National Marine Fisheries Service, the City of Clifton, the Borough of Rutherford, the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission, the Clifton Board of Education, local community groups, and the Nereid Boat Club, among other stakeholders.

This group of stakeholders seized the opportunity to enhance the community, restore ecologies, honor history, and promote public awareness to improve the health of the Passaic River.
