City of Toronto Awards Stantec Third Consecutive Assignment Under Bridge Program Management Assignment for Infrastructure Rehabilitation

$16 million contract will help improve transportation safety and connectivity throughout Toronto

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has been selected through the competitive procurement process by the City of Toronto to lead the city’s third consecutive assignment of its Bridge Program Management Assignment (BPMA). The assignment is valued at C$16 million and will include bridge assessment, preliminary design, detailed design, and contract administration for the rehabilitation of 28 bridges over five years.

The City of Toronto launched its BMPA in 2017, a program aimed at keeping the infrastructure of Canada’s largest city current and awarded Stantec the first two contracts of the program. Since its launch in 2017, Stantec has provided preliminary design, detailed design, and construction administration for the rehabilitation or replacement of 63 bridges. Notable examples include the rehabilitation of major thoroughfare bridges, including the Don Mills Road bridge over Don Valley Parkway, the Lawrence Avenue Bridge over the Don Valley Parkway, and the Kitchener GO Rail over Bloor Street. Once complete, all three assignments of the program will have rehabilitated more than 90 bridges.

For this latest assignment, the Stantec project team will begin by assessing each bridge site to develop practical, cost-effective rehabilitation solutions. Following these assessments, the team will provide preliminary design, detailed design, and construction administration for every bridge. Throughout the process including data analysis, design, and construction oversight, the team will balance life-cycle costs, reduce community and environmental impacts, provide for public safety, and improve long-term durability, while meeting regulatory standards and stakeholder needs.

Stantec has a longstanding relationship with the City of Toronto. The firm recently led design efforts for the replacement of two bridges crossing Black Creek at Jane Street and Scarlett Road in Toronto and has supported multiple phases and sections of the elevated Gardiner Expressway Rehabilitation Project.

Across North America, Stantec’s bridge team has supported the delivery of many bridge replacement, rehabilitation, design, and construction projects. The firm led inspection efforts on the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge in Nevada and led the design for the replacement of the Smithland Bridge in Livingston County, Kentucky. The company also led the design and construction of a new five-span, 500-metre-long bridge adjacent to the Stoney Trail Bridge over the Bow River in Calgary, Alberta.
