London’s super sewer to handle CSOs

Thames Water, the United Kingdom’s largest water and wastewater services agency, appointed CH2M HILL as program manager for the Thames Tideway Tunnel to help deliver what’s being called the super-sewer, which is expected to prevent combined sewer overflows (CSOs) in London from entering the River Thames. The project involves construction of London’s deepest-ever tunnel—the Thames Tunnel—as deep as 260 feet beneath ground level and spanning about 20 miles beneath the River Thames from Hammersmith in West London, to Beckton, in East London. An additional tunnel—the 4.3-mile-long Lee Tunnel—will run from Abbey Mills in Stratford to Beckton.

Home Depot pays stormwater fine

Home Depot agreed to pay a $1.3 million penalty and implement a nationwide compliance program to resolve alleged violations of the Clean Water Act, the U.S. Justice Department and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced in February. The settlement resolves alleged violations that were discovered at more than 30 construction sites in 28 states where new Home Depot stores were being built. The settlement requires that Home Depot implement a comprehensive, corporate-wide program to prevent stormwater pollution at each new store it builds nationwide.

TRB Annual Meeting sessions available online

Civil engineers unable to attend the recent Transportation Research Board (TRB) 87th Annual Meeting, Jan. 13-17, in Washington, D.C., can listen to audio recordings and view slides from select presentations online. Masdar has chosen Chicago architecture firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture to design its headquarters in Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City, the world’s first zero-carbon, zero-waste city fully powered by renewable energy. The headquarters will be the world’s first large-scale, mixed-use "positive energy" building, producing more energy than it consumes.

American Concrete Institute announces release of ACI 318-08

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) announced the release of ACI 318-08, "Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete and Commentary" and offers a summary of the incorporated changes. ACI 318 contains the latest code requirements for concrete building design and construction alongside the corresponding commentary, and includes several improvements and changes from the 2005 edition.
