Calhoun Road Project Receives a 2022 Excellence in Highway Design Award

The project is honored by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT)

BROOKFIELD, Wis. — The Calhoun Road (CTH M to WIS 190) project in Brookfield, Wis., was recently selected to receive a 2022 Excellence in Highway Design award in the Best Local Program Design category from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). raSmith collaborated with the City of Brookfield, WisDOT, and numerous other stakeholders to provide transportation design services for this roadway reconstruction. It is one of the largest and most complex WisDOT Local Program projects in Wisconsin.

This two-mile project navigated substantial design and environmental challenges to expand an important route in the heart of Brookfield from a two-lane rural roadway to a four-lane divided roadway with bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The project included the construction of a new box culvert, three stormwater ponds, a new traffic signal, and two railroad crossings with upgraded signals and gates. Additionally, extensive public involvement was required to ensure the proposed design best addressed the needs of various project stakeholders.

“The design team faced a wide range of design and environmental challenges on this important project,” said Brad Severson, raSmith project manager. “Since the road opened, businesses and residents have shared a lot of positive feedback on the safety and operational improvements to the corridor. We are proud to have been involved with this successful project that will serve the City of Brookfield for decades to come!”

Over the past 25 years, a three-mile segment of Calhoun Road south of this project underwent a roadway expansion. CTH M to WIS 190 was the last remaining segment to be expanded to provide a continuous five-mile roadway through the City of Brookfield.

The Calhoun Road (CTH M to WIS 190) project also received a 2021 Top Project Award from The Daily Reporter.
