Buckland & Taylor International, Inc. will design new Tappan Zee Bridge main span

NORTH VANCOUVER, B.C. – Tappan Zee Constructors (a consortium of Fluor Enterprises, Inc., American Bridge Company, Granite Construction Northeast, Inc. and Traylor Bros., Inc.) has been selected by the New York State Thruway Authority to design and build the new Tappan Zee Bridge in New York State.

Buckland & Taylor International, Inc. (B&T), as subconsultant to lead designer HDR, will be responsible for the design and erection engineering for the twin 1200 ft (365 m) cable-stayed main spans. Additionally, B&T with COWI North America partners Ben C. Gerwick, Inc. and Ocean & Coastal Consultants, Inc. will be responsible for operations and maintenance planning, structural health monitoring system design, corrosion protection planning and service life modeling, ship impact assessment and the Rockland permanent dock and bulkhead design.

“This is a fantastic win for Buckland & Taylor and the entire Tappan Zee Constructors team” says Senior Vice President Don Bergman. “This signature bridge is another example of B&T’s ability to partner with America’s leading builders and designers to produce constructible cost-effective bridge solutions in the design-build market."

The 3-mile long (including approaches) Tappan Zee Bridge links Westchester and Rockland Counties across the Hudson River in New York State. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2013 and is expected to take five years to complete.
