ASCE announces search for new executive director

RESTON, Va. – The American Society of Civil Engineers, one of the largest professional associations in the United States, has begun the search process for a new chief staff executive to replace long-time Executive Director Patrick J. Natale, P.E., CAE, F.ASCE, who recently announced plans to retire in December 2014.

ASCE has formed a search committee, chaired by the Society’s immediate past president, Gregory DiLoreto, P.E., F.ASCE. The committee is actively seeking applications from interested candidates through May 31, 2014, and intends to complete its work and announce its decision in fall 2014.

“As an individual member society, our success relies on a strong staff executive who can work in partnership with the Board to help us continue to build on our global reputation as a leader in civil engineering and infrastructure,” DiLoreto says. “At the same time, we need a staff executive who understands that our business operations, which are essential to sustaining and growing the organization, operate in a competitive and changing landscape.”

ASCE represents more than 145,000 civil engineers worldwide, with approximately ten percent residing outside the United States. ASCE is the world’s largest publisher of civil engineering content, and is one of the largest providers of continuing professional education and conferences. The Society is well-known for its advocacy efforts, most notably its Report Card for America’s Infrastructure. ASCE’s operations include eight semi-autonomous technical Institutes, a separately incorporated organization offering specialty certification, and an affiliate ASCE Foundation. ASCE also provides association management services as the secretariat of the American Association of Engineering Societies.

Candidates for the position of executive director should have significant experience in a senior leadership position, with a demonstrated record of success managing complex organizations with a minimum $10 million annual budget. Experience working with a membership driven organization is also essential. An advanced degree in civil engineering or the related sciences is strongly preferred, and a P.E. license is desired. Ideal candidates will offer strategic vision, business acumen, and a strong commitment to modelling our core values.
