ARCADIS projects recognized for excellence

Highlands Ranch, Colo. — ARCADIS announced that it received multiple awards of excellence for various projects across the United States.

The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) recognized ARCADIS for its work on the following projects:

  • New York City’s Whale Creek Sludge Dock and Transport Vessel — ACEC New York Diamond Award, ACEC’s highest accolade, and an ACEC national recognition award
  • New York City’s Cross River Pump Station — ACEC New York Gold Award
  • Tucson Water’s Advanced Oxidation Process Water Treatment Facility in Arizona – ACEC Arizona Judges Choice Award and an ACEC national recognition award
  • Belmont Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant UV Disinfection System in Indianapolis – ACEC Indiana Honor Award and an ACEC national recognition award
  • Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E) Whole House Replacement Water Program in Hinkley, Calif. – ACEC California Honor Award and an ACEC national recognition award

Additionally, the American Academy of Environmental Engineers & Scientists (AAEES) named Tucson Water’s Advanced Oxidation Process Water Treatment Facility as the winner of the grand prize for design and Whale Creek Sludge Dock and Transport Vessel as an honor award winner for design in its Excellence in Environmental Engineering & Science Awards. This recognition annually identifies and awards the best in environmental engineering and science.

New York City

• Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant’s Whale Creek Sludge Dock and Transport Vessel moves sludge from the plant to a central dewatering facility. The Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant treats wastewater from a combined sewer service area of approximately 25.4 square miles in parts of Brooklyn, Queens and lower Manhattan. ARCADIS provided construction management services to upgrade the level of water treatment to meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for secondary treatment. This project has enabled the city to begin waterfront revitalization and redevelop the community at this site.

• The Cross River Pump Station uses a complex series of underground aqueducts, shafts, tunnels and dams to deliver clean water collected from upstate mountains to New York City. ARCADIS teams performed engineering design services that included design of a robust 60 million gallons per day raw water pumping facility, design services during construction and environmental/construction permitting. This robust pump station has the capacity to pump water from the Cross River Reservoir to the Delaware Aqueduct which provides protection to the community in case of a water emergency such as drought or drinking water contamination.

Arizona

• The Advanced Oxidation Process Water Treatment Facility in Tucson is a major improvement to the Tucson International Airport Area Groundwater Remediation Project (TARP). The original TARP facilities have been cleaning groundwater at one of Arizona’s largest Superfund sites and providing Tucson Water’s customers with drinking water for more than two decades. The new facility destroys hard-to-treat contaminants, providing high-quality drinking water for the Tucson community. Tucson Water engaged ARCADIS to perform all phases of engineering, and ARCADIS continues to provide operations and maintenance technical support.

Indiana

• The Belmont Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant UV Disinfection System in Indianapolis serves nearly half a million homes in this community. Belmont is one of the five largest wastewater ultraviolet light disinfection installations in North America. The $9.8 million project doubles the capacity of the plant to inactivate bacteria such as E.coli in treated wastewater without creating harmful disinfection byproducts or requiring additional chemicals.

Southern California

• The Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) Whole House Replacement Water Program removes hexavalent chromium from drinking water wells in the community of Hinkley, Calif. This project provides Hinkley residents with the peace of mind that they can continue to live and work in their community. PG&E’s ARCADIS-led team successfully overcame the unprecedented challenges associated with meeting a treatment requirement 1,000 times lower than the California drinking water standard and met very aggressive compliance deadlines to complete the groundbreaking design, fabrication, installation, testing, and commissioning of the program.

“I am extremely proud of these significant industry awards which highlight the innovation and advanced technology ARCADIS brings to our clients,” said John Jastrem, CEO of ARCADIS North America. “Every one of these projects represents a team of professionals working diligently to provide sustainable solutions for reliable sources of clean water around the U.S., which truly contributes to the ARCADIS mission of improving the quality of life around the world.”
