APWA conference highlights sustainability in public works

KANSAS CITY, MO. — Sustainable infrastructure solutions and success stories, as well as expanded educational programming will be featured during the American Public Works Association (APWA) Sustainability in Public Works Conference, May 13-15, 2013, at the San Diego’s Sheraton Hotel & Marina in California. Featured will be a newly expanded education program that highlights five distinct learning tracks, including topics such as Perspectives on Climate Change; Strategies: Planning, Design and Implementation; Measuring Success: Rating Systems & Certifications; Public Works Practices and Innovations, and Views on Solar Power.

Sponsored in part by the APWA Center of Sustainability Leadership Team, whose mission is to provide tools and resources that allow decision makers to implement more sustainable, economically sound, and socially responsible long-term solutions, the APWA Sustainability in Public Works Conference will provide specialized workshops for public works professionals in all areas to build the skills, knowledge and tools to create sustainable communities.

As public works professionals are vital to the overall well-being of a community, their day-to-day choices influence energy use, air and watershed quality, ecosystem and human health, climate impacts, civic life and local prosperity. At the APWA Sustainability Conference, public works and sustainability leaders will join together to share solutions and strategize for the future. The educational programming includes many educational sessions, such as Implementing a New LID Drainage Manual — What Have We Learned; Sustainability Fueling Phoenix’s Past, Present and Future; Certified, Silver, Gold — How to Navigate the Various Waters of the Sustainability Certification Programs; Six Steps to Your Sustainable Flood Fight Success Story; Sustainable Transportation Practices — Can They Really Save Money; Implementing Sustainability — An Operational Perspective; Solar Power Purchase Agreements: The “Almost” Free Lunch; and Using Envision to Advance the Practice of Sustainable Design and Constructions; as well as many others.
