AECOM tunneling projects awarded major engineering recognition

MIAMI – AECOM, the world’s premier infrastructure firm, won Project of the Year from the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association during their fifth annual International Tunnelling Awards (ITA) in Miami, Florida.

The Tuen-Mun Chek Lap Kok Link – Northern Connection Subsea Tunnel Section Project in Hong Kong, China, earned Major Project of the Year (over €500M). AECOM served as the owner’s project engineer for the Hong Kong Highways Department, providing design and contract administration services. The project encompasses a 5-kilometer twin-tube sub-sea tunnel. The world largest tunnel boring machine (TBM) was used to excavate the tunnel and it was also the first time a mini-TBM was used for cross passage construction in Hong Kong. Dragages Hong Kong Ltd and Bouygues Travaux Publics served as contractors.

For the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Agency (Metro), AECOM provided design, planning and engineering services as part of a joint venture for the Regional Connector Transit Project, which was awarded Project of the Year (with a value between €50M and €500M). The design-build project covers 1.9 miles of underground light rail with three new stations. Upon completion, this vital public transportation connection will allow riders to seamlessly travel from Santa Monica to East Los Angeles and Azusa to Long Beach without switching trains. It will also connect the Exposition and Blue light rail lines with Union Station, offering LA commuters enhanced public transportation options. Forecasted to open in 2022, the Regional Connector will improve access to local and regional destinations across LA County. AECOM was part of a team that included the design-builder contractor, Regional Connector Constructors, a joint venture of Skanska and Traylor.

“It’s a distinct honor for us to be part of two award-winning project teams,” said Nasri Munfah, Senior Vice President and The Americas Tunneling Practice Leader. “These projects really showcase our people and ability to provide innovative solutions for projects on opposite ends of the globe. We congratulate our clients, partner contractors, and all project stakeholders who were involved in the success of the projects and above all we congratulate the communities and the public who will benefit from these infrastructures.”
