Philadelphia, PA – Urban Engineers, Inc. (Urban) is proud to be part of the project team that successfully rehabilitated the Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Drive Bridge. The $20.1 million bridge rehabilitation was recently unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Mayor Cherelle L. Parker, among other regional leaders. Serving as a vital connection between MLK Drive and Eakins Oval, the rehabilitated bridge includes three vehicle lanes and a 10.5-foot, shared-use path that connects to the MLK Drive Trail. Urban provided comprehensive construction management and thorough construction inspection (CMCI) services to the City of Philadelphia’s Streets Department.

The 700-foot-long bridge, which originally opened in 1966, has undergone extensive upgrades. These improvements include replacing and widening the concrete deck, performing structural steel work, making substructure repairs, and applying fresh paint. The enhancements ensure safe access for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

Closed for more than two years during construction, the bridge’s reopening restores an important connection in the City’s trail network. Cyclists and walkers can once again enjoy the full loop, which passes the Philadelphia Museum of Art and follows Kelly Drive along the river, reconnecting residents and visitors alike with this beloved recreational corridor.

“Urban is proud to have contributed to this vital project, which involved updating structural integrity while addressing current infrastructure needs,” said Urban’s Antonio Ditri, PE, Associate Vice President, Department Manager, Construction Services. “The MLK Drive Bridge is an essential connection for many, and we are pleased to collaborate with the City, the contractor Haines & Kibblehouse, and the designer Modjeski and Masters to enhance safety and accessibility.”
