O’Donnell & Naccarato Celebrates Groundbreaking of $550M UM Shore Regional Medical Center

The 408,000 square-foot facility will provide a full suite of expanded hospital and outpatient services to meet the evolving healthcare needs of the region

Easton, Maryland – O’Donnell & Naccarato (O&N), a leading and employee-owned structural engineering firm headquartered in Philadelphia, celebrated the groundbreaking of the new, 408,000 square foot UM Shore Regional Medical Center on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

The $550 million state-of-the-art facility, set to open in 2028, will fully replace the Regional Medical Center’s existing facilities with a six-story, 147-bed tower, a connected two-story outpatient care facility and a central utility plant on a sprawling, 230-acre campus just off Longwoods Road. The new hospital, operated by UM SHR and part of the University of Maryland Medical System, will offer a full suite of expanded medical services and set a new standard of rural healthcare to support the evolving needs of the region.

“UM SRH is expanding access to critical healthcare services, which will benefit communities on the Eastern Shore for generations to come,” said O&N Vice President Michael Herrmann, PE, SE. “O&N has worked within an integrated design approach with key members of the hospital and design team and is excited to see the project come to fruition.”

O&N is providing structural engineering services for the world-class healthcare facility, which will be the largest on the Eastern Shore. The 325,000 square foot medical services building and adjoining 60,000 square foot outpatient structure will utilize a two-way concrete slab structural system with drop panels, as well as concrete shear walls and concrete moment frames to resist lateral loads.

O&N is partnering on the project with architect and designer HKS Architects Inc. and construction manager The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company. Highland Associates is providing MEP services, and Daft McCune Walker will serve as the civil engineer.

O&N has deep experience providing structural engineering services for hospitals and healthcare facilities across the country. The firm recently broke ground on a planned expansion of Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill in New Jersey and has completed work on dozens of major projects, including New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia, Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia, Indiana University Health in Indianapolis and Jackson Health System in Miami.
