ACI’s Suite of Concrete Knowledge

ACI’s Suite of Concrete Knowledge

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) is a leading authority and resource worldwide for the development, dissemination, and adoption of its consensus-based standards, technical resources, educational programs, and proven expertise. Founded in 1904, the Institute has been helping Individuals and organizations involved in concrete design, construction, and materials, who share a commitment to pursuing the best use of concrete, for more than a century.

ACI’s purpose, outlined in its 1904 Charter, is to organize the efforts of its members for a non-profit public service in gathering, correlating, and disseminating information for the improvement of the design, construction, manufacture, use, and maintenance of concrete products and structures. By upholding this purpose, professionals within the concrete industry acknowledge ACI as an impartial platform for generating trustworthy technical insights.

Suite of Codes

ACI offers a suite of concrete knowledge through a diverse collection of over a two dozen individual design codes, accessible via print or digital download, and conveniently available online through the ACI Store. These codes span various topics including structural concrete design, concrete repair, precast concrete, seismic analysis, residential concrete, and more. Developed through a rigorous consensus process, ACI codes have established reliable standards for over a century. Whether through individual purchases from the ACI Store or comprehensive access via the ACI Collection Online Subscription, all ACI codes and standards are readily accessible to users.

An ACI code sets forth the minimal requirements for concrete or masonry structures within its scope to ensure the safety, health, and well-being of the public. These codes can be adopted by a model building code, a regulatory agency, or utilized by an industrial or governmental organization involved in the construction or manufacturing of projects utilizing concrete.

ACI technical committees disseminate information that aligns with a committee’s mission. Among ACI’s processes, standardization stands out as the most rigorous consensus-building method. This process ensures the most comprehensive input and top-tier quality assurance for documents. When documents undergo this procedure, they become recognized as ACI standards.

These standards typically fall into two categories: design codes and construction specifications. Design codes cater to design professionals rather than construction teams, encompassing code requirements, code cases, acceptance criteria, and design specifications.

ACI Concrete Convention

The Institute’s premier event, the ACI Concrete Convention, is the world’s gathering place for advancing concrete materials, design, construction, and repair. Held twice a year, ACI Conventions bring together the world’s most well-known concrete industry leaders with professionals looking to learn. ACI Conventions provide a forum for networking and education, and an opportunity to provide input on the concrete industry’s latest codes, specifications, and guides. The ACI Convention boasts technical and educational sessions that provide the latest research, case studies, best practices, and the opportunity to earn Professional Development Hours (PDHs) and CEUs.

At Convention, committees meet to develop the standards, reports, and other documents necessary to keep up with the ever-changing world of concrete technology. Committee meetings are open to all registered convention attendees.

Every committee member contributes their training and expertise for the betterment of the broader public. Through upholding a rigorous standard of professional and technical proficiency among its committee memberships, ACI ensures the publication of reliable information on concrete and its diverse applications. With over 125 technical committees, each committee is assigned a distinct area of expertise.

The next ACI Concrete Convention will take place in Philadelphia, PA, USA from November 3rd – November 6th, 2024. Registration is currently open online. Discounted rates are offered until November 1st, 2024. To learn more about the ACI Concrete Convention and to register, please visit aciconvention.org.
