R.D. OLSON CONSTRUCTION ANNOUNCES COMPLETION OF ANOTHER LEED CERTIFIED AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROPERTY IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY

Opening of Rose Hill Courts follows work on Las Flores Apartments in Santa Monica and West Terrace Apartments in Hyde Park

Irvine, Calif. – R.D. Olson Construction, an award-winning general contracting firm in California, has announced completion of yet another LEED certified affordable housing property in Los Angeles County. The recently opened Phase One of Rose Hill Courts is an 89-unit project for the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) and their development partner, Related California. With architecture by BSB Design, the two new buildings, on 5.24 acres, more than double the previous number of apartments by replacing the original 1942 public housing complex.

Amenities at Rose Hill Courts include an on-site administrative office, community library, laundry room, community room with kitchen for events, garden courtyard with fixed exercise equipment, and playground. The development offers secure indoor bike storage for up to 80 bicycles, and 90 ground-level parking spaces.

Specialized work that ensures cost-saving sustainability is one of R.D. Olson’s many areas of expertise. While they have long been a leading construction firm for large multi-housing projects, adding LEED certified affordable housing projects to their portfolio is another way to distinguish themselves and highlight the company’s capabilities.

Previous R.D. Olson affordable housing construction projects in Los Angeles County include:

Las Flores Apartments in Santa Monica, R.D. Olson’s first project with developers Community Corporation of Santa Monica, includes 73 units of affordable housing featuring key amenities for residents. Designed by DE Architects, the development has a combination of one-, two-, and three-bedroom layouts in a four-story building with below-grade parking. Amenities include a community room, an ocean-view rooftop deck with barbeques, a dedicated second-floor outdoor gardening deck for residents, and a children’s playground surrounded by a luscious landscape with solar power throughout the building. The building’s use of corrugated metal paneling covers 75% of its exterior creating an effect of metal containers assembled on top of one another.

West Terrace Apartments in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles offers 64 affordable units ranging from studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments with easy access to local transit including the Los Angeles Metro Station. Residents enjoy access to various onsite amenities including an exclusive community courtyard with a connected playground, a community room, and a lounge area. The 52,000 square-foot community, designed by FSY Architects, was a project for non-profit developers A Community of Friends.

“Fulfilling the need for affordable housing is especially satisfying when our construction work includes LEED certified sustainable elements,” said Bill Wilhelm, President of R.D. Olson Construction. “The design and quality of work and materials of these new communities rivals most market rate developments.”

R.D. Olson is currently working on other affordable housing communities including Kettner Crossing in San Diego, and Emporia Housing in Ontario.
