THOMAS & HUTTON ANNOUNCES NEWEST CERTIFIED FLOODPLAIN MANAGER

Thomas & Hutton (T&H) is pleased to announce its newest Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM). Water Resources Designer Kayla Kernich passed the Association of State Floodplain Managers’ (ASFPM) national-certified floodplain manager exam.

The role of the nation’s floodplain managers is expanding due to increases in disaster loss, the emphasis on mitigation to alleviate the cycle of damage-rebuild-damage, and a recognized need for professionals to adequately address these issues. With CFM certification, Kayla is well equipped to assist clients with using floodplains to minimize flood risks, reduce loss from floods, protect public health and safety, and improve the quality of life for a community.

Kayla joined Thomas & Hutton’s Water Resources Department in 2018, shortly after obtaining her degree in Biosystems Engineering from Clemson University. She plans, analyzes, designs, and permits water resources-related projects, including stormwater drainage systems and water quality systems across the state of South Carolina. Kayla is an active member of the Southeast Stormwater Association (SESWA) and the Water Environment Association of South Carolina (WEASC).

Kayla is currently working on several notable South Carolina projects, including assisting Richland County Economic Development with the storm drainage calculations for Scout Motor’s EV plant; the Waccamaw Neck Watershed Master Plan addressing stormwater management needs within Pawleys Island and Murrells Inlet watersheds; and the Eightmile Branch Tributary/Windsor Hill Flood Study addressing ongoing flooding, erosion, stormwater infrastructure repair, and water quality improvements.
