Mini, but mighty!

Mini, but mighty!

The new compact system from Subpod can compost an entire household’s waste

The successful crowdfunded Byron Bay startup, Subpod, achieved 20,000 new composters in 2020. This year they have released a smaller version of their revolutionary in-ground compost system.

Until now, composting in cities has been too impractical, complicated and messy for people leading busy lives. With the launch of Subpod Mini, people that live in small spaces now have an easy way to compost their food waste!

The Subpod compost systems are unique in-ground worm farms that sit inside gardens. Compost worms and microbes live inside the Mini feeding on food waste and spreading rich nutrients into the soil as they explore the garden. The soil keeps the Subpod systems insulated, making them easy to maintain and prevent common issues that often occur with other systems.

“It really does take any fear out of composting. The fear of any smell, the fear of it being gross, the fear of not knowing what to do,” said Ali Zupon, who is a Subpod user based in Ohio.

Subpod Mini is a compact Height 16.93″, Width 19.45″, Depth 17.72″ and capable of composting up to 22lb of food waste a week – more than enough for the average family’s 20 lb [Jean C. Buzby, etc all 2019]. 42% smaller than the original Subpod, it’s aimed towards renters, young families and smaller households.

Subpod’s mission is to make composting a part of everyday life, and the release of Subpod Mini brings that goal closer than ever. With an accessible pre-order price of $119, Subpod Mini is a high-end compost system that easily competes with old school models in both price and efficiency.

The waste from our plates matters. In 2017, Project Drawdown ranked reducing food waste in third place out of over 100 promising climate change solutions (beating both solar farms and electric cars).

The average person throws out roughly 238 lb of food waste per year, and if food waste was a country, it would be the third-biggest producer of greenhouse gases in the world (behind China and the US), contributing 8% of the overall emissions causing climate change. [Scientific American, 2013]

But there’s a simple fix for the food waste problem. If just 1% of the people living in cities started composting with Subpod Mini, it would have the same environmental impact as planting a 19 million-acre forest, that’s the size of 9 Yellowstone Parks!
