DEA Founder David F. Evans to retire April 1, 2016

Portland, Ore. — David F. Evans, P.E., P.L.S., F.ASCE, founder of David Evans and Associates, Inc. (DEA) in Portland, Ore., and its parent company David Evans Enterprises, Inc. (DEEI), will retire April 1, 2016. Since 2010, Evans has served on DEEI’s board of directors. His retirement will be 40 years to the day that he started the professional services consulting firm with one associate, David H. Gould. Since then, DEA has grown from two people in Portland to more than 1,000 people in eight states and 24 offices. The firm has served more than 9,000 clients and generated more than $2.5 billion in revenue during its 40-year history.

With its roots in Portland, Evans’s and DEA’s work are evident throughout the metropolitan area. Signature projects include work on: RiverPlace, the Oregon Convention Center, Portland Performing Arts Center, Hawthorne Bridge Rehabilitation and many residential projects, including Kingsgate and Forest Park Estates. More recently, the firm’s work has ranged from a major segment of TriMet’s Portland-to-Milwaukie LRT program, program management of the Sellwood Bridge design and construction, to Project Management Oversight for the Federal Transit Administration on the Ferry Street and Battery Park Stations in New York City, home of the recently opened Oculus.

Evans credits the firm’s philosophy of “finding outstanding people and giving them the freedom and support to do what they do best” as the major factor contributing to the firm’s growth and success. “Combining our values and vision with that philosophy made our firm an attractive place for one’s career. DEA is in the good hands of outstanding leaders so I know a bright future is secure as I leave,” said Evans.

About his retirement, DEEI Chairman and CEO Al Barkouli, Ph.D, P.E., said, “Dave is one of the most talented and creative engineers I know. Evans has been recognized locally and nationally in the engineering/construction industry and as a leader in Oregon, serving as a board member of charitable, state and business organizations.

A registered professional engineer and land surveyor, Evans obtained professional licenses in Oregon, Washington, California, Hawaii and New York. He is a Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers, and was a member of the American Council of Engineering Companies. Evans served on the executive committee of the Design Professionals Coalition and on the board of directors of the Construction Industry Round Table.

In 2011, Evans was honored with a SIR award from the Associated General Contractors of Oregon. The award is presented to people who exemplify the chapter’s core values of skill, integrity and responsibility (SIR). Known as the Oscar of the construction industry, the SIR award is the industry’s most prestigious award and normally presented every two years.

Evans also was pleased to accept DEA’s 2007 Oregon Ethics in Business award, sponsored by Willamette University.

Committed to the firm’s value of involvement in the community, Evans is a past board member of the Oregon Public Broadcasting Corporation (OPB), the Japanese Garden Society of Oregon, the Oregon State Parks Trust and Oregon Health & Science University’s Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation. He originated DEA’s partnership with Abernethy Elementary School, which continues today.

In 2013, Evans authored Achieving Zero: My life and love of Consulting Engineering. About the memoir, the Kirkus Review comments, “Evans writes with elegant clarity and displays a ferocious passion for his profession. A must for the aspiring consulting engineer.”
