Robert Card receives ASCE 2015 Stephen D. Bechtel Pipeline Engineering Award

Houston — The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) selected Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam’s (LAN) Chief Pipe Engineer Robert J. Card, P.E., M.ASCE, as the 2015 recipient of the Stephen D. Bechtel Pipeline Engineering Award. This award recognizes outstanding achievements by a member of ASCE who, through research, planning, design or construction, has advanced the art, science and technology of pipeline engineering. The award will be presented during the ASCE Pipelines Conference in August in Baltimore.

“The award is a tribute to Bob’s outstanding service to the pipeline industry in the last 35 years,” said LAN President Dennis Petersen. “It’s a great honor that he has worked very hard to achieve.”

A nationally-renowned pipe expert, Card has designed more than 2,000 pipeline projects using a variety of pipe materials up to 198-inches in diameter. His pipeline design expertise extends to many types of pipe materials, including concrete pressure, steel, reinforced concrete, stainless steel, ductile iron, fiberglass reinforced plastic, and high-density polyethylene.

Card’s pipeline design experience includes projects in more than 40 states and six foreign countries. Some of his notable projects include the Lake Fork Interconnect and Sunset Pump Station for the City of Dallas Water Utilities, Southeast Houston Water Purification Plant Phase 1 Expansion, the Robert A. Skinner Plant in Southern California and the Lake Tawakoni Water Treatment Plant for the North Texas Municipal Water District.

Card, who joined LAN in 2009, oversees the firm’s pipeline design tasks. In addition to providing his expertise on a number of projects, Card co-authored LAN’s book titled “An Owner’s Quick Reference Manual for the Structural Design of Buried Pipes.”

Card has played a critical role in promoting national pipe standards. He is a member of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and serves on its steel pipe standards committee. He also is a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials, the Steel Tank Institute/Steel Plate Fabricators Association, and the Steel Water Pipe Manufacturers Technical Advisory Committee.

Card holds a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the University of Connecticut. He is a registered professional engineer in nine states, including Texas.
