Buckland & Taylor wins Engineering Excellence Award

North Vancouver, Canada — Buckland & Taylor, a COWI Company based in North Vancouver, Canada, won an American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Honor Award for its work on the Milton-Madison Bridge Replacement. The project cut expected closing days of the bridge from a full year to only a couple of weeks. Additionally, the completed project was 20 percent below the initial engineers' cost estimate.

The Milton-Madison Bridge opened in April 2014 and currently holds the record for the longest lateral bridge slide in North America. The bridge crosses the Ohio River from Kentucky to Indiana and was replaced due to the poor structural condition and functional deficiency of the structure. Working with the Owners and the rest of the Design Build team, Buckland & Taylor (as a subconsultant to Burgess & Niple) designed the new steel truss superstructure and engineered the procedures and temporary works to erect and slide the new trusses.

Murray Johnson, Buckland & Taylor's Vice President & Project Director, who acted as the Construction Engineering Lead on the Milton-Madison Bridge Replacement, said, "We are ecstatic to receive the Honor Award tonight on behalf of Buckland & Taylor, Burgess & Niple, Walsh Construction, the Indiana Department of Transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. The success of the project can be directly attributed to the innovation and daily hard work brought by each team member; in addition to the support we received working with the Indiana Department of Transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. We are very proud of this honor and excited to be celebrating with all of the other winners."

The annual ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards Gala took place on April 21. Murray Johnson, along with project partners Charlie Gannon from Walsh Construction (the Lead for the Design Build Team) and Tom Bolte from Burgess & Niple (the Prime Engineering Consultant) accepted the award on stage at the Gala in Washington, D.C. The award also recognized the Owners, the Indiana Department of Transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Also in attendance from Buckland & Taylor was Genaro Velez, New York Practice Lead.
