HMM wins Awards of Excellence for Niagara Tunnel and Port Mann/Highway 1

Iselin, N.J. — Hatch Mott MacDonald was honored with two Awards of Excellence at the Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards Gala, held October 23 in Ottawa. HMM received one CCE Award of Excellence in association with its parent company Hatch Ltd., in the category of Natural Resources, Mining, Industry & Energy. The award was given for work on the Niagara Tunnel Project in Niagara Falls, Ontario. HMM received the second award with the MMM Group as part of the H5M joint venture, in the category of Transportation. This award was for onshore works designed as part of the Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project in Vancouver.

Niagara Tunnel

Describing the Niagara Tunnel project, CCE organizers wrote, “Ontario Power Generation wanted to increase power production at its Niagara hydroelectric generating facility. Hatch Mott MacDonald and Hatch, as Owner’s Engineer, provided services from concept to completion of the world’s largest machine-bored hard rock tunnel, diverting an additional 500 cubic meters per second of river water and generating an additional 1.5 terawatt hours of clean renewable energy. Hatch Mott MacDonald and Hatch employed several firsts including the world’s largest hard rock tunnel boring machine, an electrically testable waterproof membrane, and laser measurement of unreinforced concrete liner deflection during the prestressing process.”

HMM has received previous awards for the Niagara Tunnel Project, including a 2014 Award of Merit (Consulting Engineers of Ontario), the 2013 Canadian Tunnelling Project of the Year (Tunnelling Association of Canada), and the 2013 Premier Project Award (Platts Global Energy Awards).

Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project: Onshore Works

Describing the Port Mann/Highway 1 project, CCE organizers wrote, “The Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project is the largest transportation construction project in British Columbia’s history. This signature project improves transit connections and the movement of people and goods through Metro Vancouver. Hatch Mott MacDonald and MMM Group’s H5M joint venture successfully designed the project’s onshore works which, valued at [CDN] $1.6 billion, widened 37 km of TransCanada Highway 1 between Vancouver and Langley, included 45 new structures, and upgraded 14 interchanges.”

HMM has received previous awards for the Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project, including the 2014 Lieutenant Governor's Award for Engineering Excellence (Association of Consulting Engineering Companies, British Columbia), the 2014 Award of Excellence for Transportation & Bridges (Association of Consulting Engineering Companies, British Columbia) and the 2014 British Columbia Deputy Minister’s Consulting Engineers Award for Excellence in Design and Contract Preparation.
